Bio-fuels from cellulose
Producing petrol from sawdust. This is the goal that scientists at the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis at KU Leuven in Belgium had set themselves. And this is what they managed to achieve, in a very short time, as a result of a truly exceptional research project.
The team of chemists was, in fact, able to develop a process that efficiently separates cellulose from lignin, transforming the former into hydrocarbon chains. These in turn can replace part of the refined petrol or be used as plastic components.
